The style of the Fontainebleau School finds its origins in the restoration of the Chateau at Fontainebleau by Francois I (1515-1547), who will commission Italian artists like Rosso, Primatice, and Nicolo dell’Abate, to undertake the decoration of his royal residence. These artists show a distinct predilection for antique, mythological and epic subjects depicted in allegories that merge painting and stucco and which are inspired by the works of the great masters Raphael or Michelangelo. They will influence artists all over Europe between 1530 and 1571.
